Fresh Flagship Scores New York Times Mention

Fresh Flagship photo by Eric T. White for the NY Times
We recently completed work on the new Fresh flagship store located in Union Square, and boy, does word travel fast. No sooner was everything installed than the did New York Times post about this light-filled retail space. Working with design teams from both Fresh and Studio Mapos, Amuneal crafted just all the display units you see in this photo—from the column surround to the “Sensorial Bar,” the open shelving, the label holders, and the product trays—we had a workshop full of custom pieces that moved swiftly from production to realization. The final product is, just as the Times says, full of "Old World" charm and unique details.

My.Suit Selected by A.R.E as 2011 Design Award Winner
My.Suit, a made-to-measure suit retailer offering a fully customizable menswear shopping experience, has just been named one of A.R.E.'s 2011 Design Award Winners. The hand-patinated steel, bronze, and glass fixtures featured in the clothier's New York City space were designed by UnSPACE and crafted by Amuneal to be reminiscent of displays found in the American Museum of Natural History. The clean, crisp lines and hand finished aspects of the illuminated showcases and multi-media fabric bar were deliberately chosen to highlight the the tailored environment.Amuneal, UnSPACE and My.Suit were chosen out of a record 298 entries by a panel of A.R.E. judges to receive one of just 54 awards. The awards will be presented on March 28th, in the Venetian Ballroom at the Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. This marks the first day of GlobalShop, and once again Amuneal will be exhibiting. We've already won Best in Show and Best Booth honors twice (awards that will also be handed out during the ceremony on March 28th) — what will we do this year to top ourselves?

President of Amuneal Technical Products Retires
Please join the Amuneal family in wishing Larry Maltin, President of Technical Products, best wishes on his upcoming retirement. His last official day is February 10, 2011.
Larry joined Amuneal in 1987 and served as the President and Chief Executive Officer for 16 years after the passing of the founder, Seymour Kamens. Seymour’s son Adam joined the company in 1993 and later assumed the role of CEO in 2003. As the company grew into new markets, Larry continued to manage the Technical Products business.
Larry’s many contributions to Amuneal include promoting the development of Amumetal 4k (A4K), a cost-effective cryogenic magnetic shielding material alternative for Cryoperm 10 ™, developing the shielding program that supports semiconductor wafer fabrication, as well as countless EMF and magnetically shielded room (MSR) projects. His most noteworthy project was a MSR at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The 61 foot long 2 layer magnetically shielded room, which included 27,000 pounds of Amumetal and over 800,000 pounds of high density concrete is part of the SRF linac at the accelerator and stands as the world’s largest known magnetic shield. Under Larry’s meticulous project management, the MSR exceeded the shielding attenuation requirements of the program and was completed weeks ahead of schedule.
Larry will continue to be a valuable resource to the Amuneal organization, spend more time with family and friends, and donate his time and talents to causes that are dear to him.
Everyone who has worked with Larry over the past 24 years is better for it and we wish him all great things.

Amuneal Goes Hollywood For A Day
Yesterday, in addition to dealing with 12” of snow, Amuneal served as a location for the filming of a new television commercial for American Heritage Credit Union. The shoot, which lasted about 12 hours and involved a crew of 20, followed the process of manufacturing a custom sign for the financial institution.
Beginning with 3D engineering models and then moving on to Amuneal’s laser-cutting system, grinding, welding, mirror polishing, and final assembly the shoot documented the skill and teamwork displayed by Amuneal’s team of fabricators as a metaphor for the teamwork that American Heritage demonstrates on behalf of their clients.
Everyone here seemed to have a great time and the film crew was genuinely impressed by the depth of process knowledge, skill, and generosity displayed in their interactions with our team. In the end the client was so happy with the sign itself that they are now looking at introducing them into their new and existing branches!

Amuneal Installs World’s Largest Magnetic Shield
On November 4, 2009, Amuneal presented a poster at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory celebrating construction completion on beam line 15 of the Neutron Spin Echo Spectrometer.
Amuneal Manufacturing recently completed installation and testing of the world’s largest known mumetal magnetically shielded enclosure for the spectrometer as part of a 38-month long project. Completed on schedule, the 61’ long, 16’ wide and 14’ high dual layer enclosure was fabricated and installed by Amuneal in the $1.4 billion Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) facility at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Amuneal’s "Mad Scientist" chosen for Project M
With the goal of inspiring young designers to make a contribution that can have a positive and significant impact on the world, each year Project M invites designers from varied backgrounds to apply for 10 available positions.
We are very proud to announce that one of Amuneal’s team was chosen to participate in this multidisciplinary design project. Justin Kumpf, a fabricator with a background in industrial design and a passion for discovery, spent two weeks collaborating on a project at Winterhouse that resulted in a project that influenced the local farming community. Culminating with Pizza Farm, an event that recognized the rich local tradition and resources of agricultural products, the design team helped to educate the community and cross-pollinate ideas and commercial awareness for the surrounding agricultural entrepreneurs.
To help inform us of his project and the impact that it has been making, Justin sponsored a Pizza Farm at Amuneal. Tapping into our group of inspired gardeners, employees were encouraged to bring in their fresh ingredients and share them in an afternoon of cooking and communal dining.

Amuneal Designs Award Winning Booth for Natural Curiosities
In our first collaboration with California-based Natural Curiosities, Amuneal designed and fabricated an installation to support their participation in the NY Gift Show. The installation, designed and constructed in a two week period, measured 10’ tall x 20’ x 22’.
Designed as a dramatic and intriguing backdrop for Natural Curiosities’ latest introduction of artwork, the installation was a perfect complement to the dynamic images and objects showcased in New York. The impact of the overall integration of the booth and the products earned the installation “Best Booth” honors.

Amuneal is Named to the Inner City 100 List for Second Straight Year
From a list of over 6500 nominations, Amuneal was named #51 of the 100 fastest growing inner city businesses. The selection and ranking is performed by the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City (ICIC) and Inc. Magazine to promote the importance and the vitality of business choosing to work and grow in urban environments.
“We are delighted to celebrate businesses like Amuneal that are playing a critical role in urban communities throughout the country,” said David G. Latimore, president and chief executive officer of the ICIC. “These high-growth businesses help to create jobs, income, and wealth for local residents, and they prove our belief that the most effective way to create economic equality in America’s inner cities is to focus on sustainable business growth and investment.”

Amuneal Organizes and Leads Local Community Clean-up
Located in one of Philadelphia’s oldest industrial and residential areas, Amuneal has become increasingly aware of our role as a responsible neighbor. To help support our local community and to improve the conditions of the neighborhood for our fellow “residents,” we worked with the city and local community action groups to sponsor and lead a local clean-up effort.
Nearly 100 Amuneal participants made up of our employees and their families showed up “ready for work” on this cold Saturday morning. Armed with brooms, shovels, and rakes and bags, we worked side-by-side with our neighbors and other local volunteers to clean and groom more than eight square blocks surrounding Amuneal’s three facilities.
The activities concluded with an open celebration and barbeque catered by Amuneal’s resident chefs.

Amuneal Receives "Best Booth" honors for second straight year
Each year we look forward to designing and fabricating an original installation to support our tradeshow participation. This year our talented team of artists, designers and fabricators worked around the clock to transform ½ mile of aluminum tubing, 1800 laser cut dragonflies, and 600 welded moths into a 14’ tall x 20’ x 30’ installation.
After working for 5 straight days to create the booth, we were extremely proud to be honored with the award for “Best Booth” at Globalshop 2009, for the second year in a row!

Imagination Playground Makes New York Times
Remember a little while ago when we posted about using piping to make playground fixtures? Well, it seems the New York Times liked the idea as well. We recently finished a big project integrating the concept, and successfully fabricated a structure we like to call "The Whispering Fence." The Fence was created as a part of architect David Rockwell's design for Rockwell Group's Imagination Playground at the South Street Sea Port, New York City. Check out the full New York Times article here. The first picture displays the finished project!

Tradeshow Recap
Every year we host our own exhibitions at two of the biggest design tradeshows in the world, Globalshop and ICFF. We use these tradeshows as opportunities to showcase our latest projects and ideas to the wider design community. This year we presented a technique that involves spraying liquid metal onto wooden components in order to give a metallic appearance to our non-metal fixtures. We had eight MDF cases sprayed with metal and a wooden tabletop applied with the same method. The booth itself was made of repeating steel forms in various overlapping patterns, and this visually stunning work of metal turned out to be a great way to attract people towards viewing some of our latest work. Some of these people who came to take a look were the folks down at DDI and VMSD Magazine.
Shortly after the event, DDI mentioned our spray-metal technique in their exposition of the Globalshop tradeshow and our friends from VMSD awarded us with "Outstanding Booth Award" after viewing what we had to offer. You can view the entire issue of DDI Magazine here to see our mention and read about the latest trends emerging to the forefront of commercial design.

Abercrombie and Fitch Madrid Flagship Opening Turns Heads

We recently worked with Abercrombie and Fitch to outfit a handful of their international flagships with blackend brass Entry Way Signs. The Entry Sign for their Madrid Flagship sat as the backdrop to A+F's 101 Hot Model's entrance at the opening of their 7th international store.
