Motor and Power Supply Shields
AC and DC power supplies such as transformers and motors create
magnetic fields that can interfere with the operation of sensitive
electronic components. Advancements in technology, coupled
with market pressure have driven manufacturers to develop
smaller and more complex systems locating the sensitive components
closer to these power supplies. Because more than one sensitive
component can be in close proximity to an interference source,
shielding the source is often the most cost-effective solution.
Most shielding designs for power supplies are based on entrapping
and containing the magnetic flux within a shield fabricated
from a high permeability material such as Amumetal. These
power supply shields can be designed for direct mounting to
an individual component or, for PC board applications, can
be soldered directly to the board itself.
Electronic components such as Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Photomultiplier Tubes (PMT) are extremely sensitive to changes in AC and DC magnetic fields. So sensitive that change in the earth's own geomagnetic field can be severe enough to cause interference on a display. Because these components are used in avionics, military, scientific and sophisticated industrial equipment where precision tolerances are often required, we have developed an extensive inventory of in-house tooling and fixtures, allowing us to offer both standard and custom fabricated shields to meet the most demanding applications.
We have spent nearly 35 years working with our customers in developing cost-effective strategies to meet the most demanding shielding requirements. Amuneal designed shields have gone into battle, traveled to the moon, and enabled life-saving procedures in hospitals.
Shields for Scientific Products
Amuneal has specialized in meeting the challenges and the
shielding needs of the scientific and research community for
nearly 35 years. From prototypes and models to full scale
shielding assemblies, we have designed products for use in
nuclear reactors, linear accelerators, hydrogen masers, zero-gravity
experiments carried out in space, and for use in cryogenic
research applications. These have been designed in collaboration
with many of the world's leading public, private and government-run
research laboratories to consistently out-perform the specified
shielding requirement.
Amuneal's Dewar and Cryostat Shields
The advancement of superconducting technologies in both commercial and research applications and the increasing sensitivity of these materials to magnetic fields has driven the need for external Dewar and Cryostat Shields. These assemblies can be constructed with removable endcaps and access ports for filling the dewar with liquid helium or nitrogen. Each unit is custom designed to meet our customers' unique performance specifications and are tested in-house prior to shipment in order to guarantee performance. These shields can typically be multi-layer or nested assemblies employing non-magnetic spacer supports between each layer of high permeability material.
Shields for Cryogenic Applications
In many cases, shields need to be internal to a Dewar or Cryostat
to work in combination with external shields to provide extremely
high levels of performance. Combining shields in this manner
can reduce environmental noise to a level below the threshold
of even the most sensitive measuring instruments such as Superconducting
Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs). As the permeability
of common shielding materials is significantly degraded at
cryogenic temperatures, special materials such as Cryoperm
10 should be used. The permeability of Cryoperm 10 at cryogenic
temperatures is slightly higher than that of Amumetal at room
temperature.
Shields fabricated from Cryoperm 10 are very effective shields
for specialized probes and for the placement of samples in
very specific regions.
