Case Study #59413: Empire State Building Stairs
Client: Skanska USA
Exhibition Designer: Thinc Design
Architect: Corgan
Location: Empire State Building, New York, NY

In 2017, Empire State Realty Trust made plans to relocate the visitor entrance into the Empire State Building and create a compelling and interactive experience for the nearly 5,000,000 visitors each year.  Amuneal was chosen by Architect, Corgan; Contractor, Skanska USA; exhibition designer, Thinc Design, as well as Empire State Realty Trust to partner with the team to create an entryway staircase worthy of the landmark location. With a footprint of 1,220 square feet the feature stair was designed, engineered, fabricated, hand finished and fully assembled in Amuneal’s state-of-the-art fabrication facility. The highly detailed feature was designed to be durable enough to handle the millions of annual visitors while celebrating the strength and design details on display in the 1931 Art Deco Skyscraper. With its 30 foot wide machined and textured treads, custom cast glass portholes, fluted and curved stainless steel top caps with art deco brass inlays and finials the stair welcomes visitors and leads them past a full scale two-story model of the iconic building. At over 25,000 pounds the feature entry stair, like the Empire State Building itself, is built to last another 100 years.
